The Ontario Citizen

The Ontario Citizen operates under a defined set of editorial standards and ethical guidelines. These principles govern all aspects of our journalistic work, from initial reporting to final publication. Our goal is to provide accurate, fair, and independent news coverage to the residents of Ontario.

These standards are upheld by every member of our editorial team. They reflect our commitment to public service journalism and maintaining the trust of our readership within the province.

Accuracy and Fact-Checking

All information published by the Ontario Citizen undergoes rigorous verification. Our reporters are responsible for confirming the authenticity of sources, data, and statements before they are included in any report.

We cross-reference facts using multiple independent sources whenever possible. Direct quotes are accurately transcribed and attributed. We differentiate between verified facts, informed opinion, and speculation.

Journalists are trained in fact-checking protocols to minimize errors. This process is integral to every story, ensuring that the public receives reliable information from our news organization.

Fairness and Right of Reply

The Ontario Citizen is committed to presenting all sides of a story fairly and impartially. Our reporting aims to reflect diverse viewpoints without bias towards any particular individual, organization, or political stance.

Individuals or organizations who are the subject of critical reporting are given a reasonable opportunity to respond to allegations. This "right of reply" is a core tenet of our editorial practice.

We endeavor to include responses within the original story, or in a clear follow-up, to ensure balance. Our journalists consider differing perspectives and present them contextually.

Independence from Commercial and Political Influence

The Ontario Citizen maintains complete editorial independence. While APG owns and operates this publication, our editorial decisions are made solely by our journalists and editorial team based on journalistic merit.

We do not accept payments or gifts that could compromise our editorial integrity. Commercial considerations do not influence the selection, direction, or content of our news coverage.

Our reporting is free from political interference. We cover all political parties and figures based on their actions and policies, without endorsing or opposing any specific political agenda.

The distinction between news content and advertising is always clear. Sponsored content is clearly labeled to avoid misleading our readers.

Corrections Policy

The Ontario Citizen is committed to correcting factual errors swiftly and transparently. If a factual inaccuracy is identified in our published work, we will amend it.

Corrections will be made promptly upon verification of the error. The nature of the correction will be clearly indicated within the article or in a dedicated corrections section.

Details of our full corrections policy, including how to report a potential error, can be found at ontariocitizen.ca/corrections.

Source Protection

Protecting confidential sources is fundamental to independent journalism. The Ontario Citizen guarantees the anonymity of sources who request it, safeguarding their identity.

Our journalists understand the importance of source protection in enabling the free flow of information on matters of public interest. We will resist efforts to compel the disclosure of confidential sources.

Commitments made to sources regarding anonymity are upheld rigorously, consistent with journalistic ethics and legal protections available in Canada.

Conflicts of Interest

Ontario Citizen journalists and editorial staff are expected to avoid situations that could create real or perceived conflicts of interest. Personal relationships, financial holdings, or external activities must not influence reporting.

Staff members disclose potential conflicts to their editors. If a conflict is deemed significant, the individual will be recused from coverage of the related topic.

Financial investments in companies or organizations that could be subjects of our reporting are to be avoided. Impartiality is crucial to maintaining public trust in our news coverage.

AI and Technology Use in Journalism

The Ontario Citizen may utilize artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies as tools to assist in newsgathering, research, and production processes. This use is always supervised by human journalists.

AI tools are not used to generate entire articles or original reporting. Any content generated or significantly assisted by AI will be clearly identified to our readers.

Our editorial team maintains ultimate responsibility for the accuracy, fairness, and ethical implications of all published content, regardless of the tools used in its creation. We assess new technologies carefully to ensure they enhance, rather than compromise, journalistic standards.

How to Complain

The Ontario Citizen values feedback regarding our editorial content and adherence to these standards. Readers who believe we have not met our ethical obligations may submit a complaint.

Concerns about factual inaccuracies, fairness, or any other aspect of our journalistic practice can be directed to our editorial team. Please provide specific details, including the article in question and the nature of your concern.
